Location

Venue:Hanham
Nearest town:Bristol
Event centre:Hanham Community Centre
Postcode:BS15 3EJ
Grid reference:ST643722
Parking information:Car Parking and Assembly will be at the Hanham Community Centre, 118-124 High Street, Hanham, Bristol BS15 3EJ. Grid Reference ST643722 The entrance to the car park, is off Hanham High Street at: https://what3words.com/backup.along.like There should be free parking available at Assembly for over 80 cars (plus 6 disabled bays) and you should self-park your car in one of the available spaces. In the unlikely event that you find there are no available spaces when you arrive, then alternative car parking is available nearby at 6 Laburnum Rd, Hanham, BS15 3DU: https://what3words.com/duke.dozed.unable This should also be free on a Sunday but please check to ensure you comply with any extant requirements. Please then walk (approx. 5 mins) down Hanham High Street (A431) to the Assembly area: https://maps.app.goo.gl/uS5pF9TwE6MjwE8J8 Local transport is available, details of which can be found here: https://bustimes.org/localities/hanham The Start is an 800m taped walk from the Hanham Community Centre car park along mainly minor residential roads. Most of the roads from the Assembly to the Start will be alongside or across roads with a 20-mph speed limit but that does not necessarily mean that all drivers will comply with that requirement so please be careful. Memorial Road, which can be busy, has a 30-mph speed limit so should be crossed with especial caution. Please be respectful of the local public and careful when crossing any roads. Juniors (U16s) must be accompanied by an adult on the walk to the Start and from the Finish. The accompanying adult should follow the tapes from the Start to the Finish to meet the junior after their course. Split Starts are available for parents. From the Finish there is a 1.2km taped walk back to the car park. The final 600m follows (in reverse) the same route as the walk to the Start. Unfortunately, there will not be any appropriate places to dump clothing. Hopefully in early June this should not be a problem.
Dog rules:Please always keep any dogs on a lead in Assembly and under control at all times and remember to collect & dispose of any poo responsibly.

Details

Description:Competitors should note that whilst the area is largely forested it has been mapped at 1:4,000 scale and using sprint specification symbols to ease legibility due to the complexity of the terrain. The area is steep sided forest with complex old quarry and mining works. The map takes account of late spring and early summer vegetation growth, and where brambles and stinging nettles could impede running progress green overprint screens have been used. More dense undergrowth areas use the second denser screen and should best be avoided for optimal route choice. There are many steep cliffs that are largely uncrossable, and are marked as such, and must be avoided. If in doubt, go round them. The map covers the area from Conham River Park in the north to Hanham Mills in the south stretching along the east side of the River Avon. The shorter courses will largely be confined to the relatively flatter and less complex north portion of the mapped area. As previously mentioned, much of the area is a series of steep sided forest with complex old quarry and mining works. There is a good path network throughout the area and along the river runs a larger track popular with walkers. Summer vegetation will be thick in places, so full leg cover will be required. Orienteering or off-road shoes with good grips, including spikes, are recommended, particularly if wet. Please be aware of other users of the area; in particular, horse riders, dog walkers and mountain bikers.
