Welcome to British Orienteering
|
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport that exercises both the mind and the body. The aim is to navigate in sequence between control points marked on a unique orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time. It does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run, walk or jog the course and progress at your own pace. Orienteering can take place anywhere from remote forest and countryside to urban parks and school playgrounds. It's a great sport for runners, joggers and walkers who want to improve their navigation skills or for anyone who loves the outdoors. Orienteering - The adventure sport for all. Read More |
Promoting sporting opportunities with the BBC
BBC Sport is supporting the governments mission to get more people playing sport by offering sports clubs a platform to promote their activities on bbc.co.uk.
From June 22, the BBC Things To Do website will promote sport taster sessions to the public on behalf of sports groups. It’s part of the BBC’s work to help inspire the public to try out sport this summer and build a lasting Olympic and Paralympic legacy.
The project will be promoted throughout the summer by BBC Sport and to the 3.3 million unique daily visitors BBC Sport’s website, so it’s a good way to promote sporting opportunities to a wide audience.
Not-for-profit and/or publicly-funded clubs are eligible to register and upload sport taster activities on Things To Do, if they meet the following criteria:
· The activities must be run from 22 June 2012 onwards
· Sessions must include active participation in sport
· Activities should either be free of charge or run on a cost recovery basis
· The sport must be accessibleto the general public, not just members
· Sessions must happen on a specific time on a specific day.
Clubs can find out more, sign up and start promoting their sport taster activities at www.bbc.co.uk/thingstodo/activitymaker
For advice on increasing participation in your club, please speak with your areas Participation Manager.
British Long Distance Orienteering Championships 2012
What a great day, the bussing worked out well as far as I was concerned. Those bus drivers were as cool as cucumbers on the narrow Eskdale roads.
The weather was sunny and bright, showing off the superb Lake District scenery at its best today.
How did the pundits do? Well Ralph Street did admit during his stint with the commentary , along with the tale of his culinary advancements since the JK – cooking a vegetable risotto and not making his mother ill was the highlight of this tale, that his track record at predictions was not great.
Yes that would appear to be so. Instead of his top three Women’s 21 Elite of Claire Ward, Sarah Rollins and Mhairi McKenzie it was as follows :
1st Sarah Rollins BAOC 75.06 for 9.8km with 505m climb
2nd a mere 5 seconds down, Heather Gardner SROC 75.11
3rd Claire Ward ESOC 78.10
For the Men 21 Elite, his predictions were Hector Haines, Oli Johnson and David Scorah
Winners were:
1st Hector Haines EUOC 92.01 for 15.6km and 690m climb
2nd Murray Strain INT 93.12
3rd Chris Smithard DEE 94.34
Oli Johnson was fourth in 95.48 and a look at the splits shows that he was in the lead at control 10 but dropped 2 minutes at 11 and 1 minute at each of 13 and 25. However the rest of his splits pretty much matched those of Hector Haines.
W818E winner was Zoe Harding SROC in 62.17 for 7.6km 365m climb
W20E winner Katrin Harding SROC took 66.16 for the same course.
M18E winner Ciaran Allen DEE took 79.11 for 11.1km and 540 m climb
M20E winner was Jonathan Crickmore SO in 67.55 for the same course.
Full results for all classes and splits are to be found here.

2012 British Orienteering Championships
The British Individual Long Distance Orienteering Championships 2012 and British Relay Orienteering Championships 2012 take place this weekend in the Lake District.
The weekend starts with a warm up event at Low Rigg Keswick today Friday 4th May, followed by the individual championships taking place in Dalegarth on Saturday 5th May. The main event assembly is in Dalegarth and the competitors not staying in the valley are mainly being transported by coach or some are using the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway, to get from the car parking in Ravenglass to the assembly area.
Starts are from 11.00 to 15.00 tomorrow and hopefully by 16.30 for most classes, we will know who the 2012 British Champions are. This race also incorporates a round of the Future Champions Cup, the UK Cup and the Masters Cup.
The relay is being staged at Helsington Barrows near Kendal, with the former Kendal race course being used as the car parking and assembly area. If there is anyone with too much energy left over after their relay run, they can race round the 1 mile course and compare their time with the winning horses when the race course was last used in the 1990s. The relay is also one of a series that together form the UK relay league.
On the bank holiday Monday there will be a race in Kendal, starting from near by the Town Hall. The Kendal urban event is part of the Nopesport Urban League, the North West Urban League and the Masters Cup.
Full details can be found on the Event website.

AGM 2012 Update Regarding Proposal 4:Membership & Levy
After seeking legal advice I can confirm that the above proposal was ratified at the AGM with 69.5% of the votes cast.
The legal responses stated:
‘Provided the Special Resolution adopting the new Articles of Association pursuant to "Special Proposal 3" did not specify a different time and/or date upon which the new Articles of Association would take effect, the Articles of Association took effect immediately upon the passing of the Special Resolution. Assuming the changes contained in "Proposal 4" do not require a change to the new Articles of Association (and can therefore be passed by Ordinary Resolution), I can confirm that Proposal 4 was validly passed at the AGM. Note that the new Articles of Association need to be filed at Companies House within 15 days of their taking effect.’
Tom Bruce, Solicitor, Farrer & Co, 66 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London WC2A 3LH
Work to implement this decision will now commence.
Proposal 4 Membership and Levy structures 2013 stated:
That from 1st January 2013 British Orienteering will have a single tier of membership with two categories:
- Senior – any member aged 21 or older on 31st December of the membership year
- Junior – any member aged 20 or younger on 31st December of the membership year
Membership fees will be nominal and capped at a level such that the budgeted amount of money to be raised from membership fees will not exceed 25% of the budgeted total income to be raised from membership and levy fees.
AND
That from 1st January 2013, a single rate of levy will be applied to all participants at all events except those covered by a British Orienteering Partnership Agreement. The principle that three juniors (M/W20 and younger) will count as one senior for levy purposes remains, but full-time students will no longer be treated as juniors for levy purposes unless they are juniors.
From 1st January 2013 until amended fees will be as follows:
Senior member – £5.00
Junior member – £2.00
Levy per senior equivalent participant – £1.00
