The information below will not only help you to better understand the Sports Development system both nationally and within you local area, it will also provide you with a useful contact guide. In most cases however it will be advantageous to make contact with these people via your Regional Development Officer (RDO) or the Participation Manager who already have links established with the various networks and their staff.

CSN

Community Sports Network

Covers the local authority area. Its remit is to pull together a range of local organisations from health, sport, education and the private sector to co-ordinate delivery at ground level.

Good network to promote your club and ‘Try Orienteering’ events.

Contact your local Sports Development Officer (SDO) or Partnership Development Manager (PDM) for further information.

 

Competition Managers

They manage a programme of competitions and festivals, usually across two school partnerships. They ensure there are competitive, inclusive opportunities for all school age children of all abilities.

Can help send children to the club, and work closely with you. They can also work with you on organising school events and can ensure they are well publicised and attended.

Community Coach

A DCMS funded programme aiming to establish paid and qualified coaches in local communities. The key aims of the programme are to offer a career structure in coaching, increase the number of qualified coaches at local level, offer support in the development of coaches and ensure the availability of high quality coaching opportunities with a focus on young people.


Usually delivered through County Sports Partnerships.  Mostly working at grass roots level.

Depending on the way community coaches work in your area they might be able to send children who are interested in orienteering.

Contact your PDM and they will put you in touch with any useful local community coaches.

CSP

County Sport Partnership

A county level organisation responsible for managing and delivering sport in that county.

Possible funding opportunities.

DCMS

Department for Culture, Media and Sport

A government organisation aiming  to improve the quality of life for all through cultural and sporting activities, to support the pursuit of excellence and to champion the tourism, creative and leisure industries.

You won’t need to deal direct with the DCMS although they have an impact on Sport England funding and strategic plans.

DCSF

Department for Children, Schools and Families

The Government has long been committed to enabling all children and young people to reach their full potential. This requires a strong lead in securing integrated children’s services and educational excellence. This new Department promises to really concentrate on achieving these objectives

 

NGB

 

National Governing Body for a specific sport

British Orienteering, UK Athletics etc.

British Orienteering is here to help you grow your club and succeed. If you want to talk to someone about growing your club then contact your Regional Development Officer

PDM

Partnership Development Manager

A full-time role usually based within a Sports College. They manage the SSP and develop strategic links with key partners in sport and the wider community.

Your local PDM can be one of your most helpful contacts. By working with them you can access their contacts in both the school system and community sport.

PLT

Primary Link Teacher

PLTs are based in primary and special schools and aim to improve the quantity and quality of PE and sport in their own schools. Usually a teacher within the school who is allocated one day per week to this role.

These teachers might well be able to help advertise your club and its events in schools and help distribute any publicity material

SSCo

School Sport Co-ordinator

An SSCo is based in a secondary school and concentrates on improving school sport opportunities, including out of hours school learning, intra and inter-school competition and club links, across a family of schools. 

They can help you take advantage of the school sport system and encourage young people to come to your club. They may also be able to provide a venue for setting up club activities.

Start by contacting your local PDM and they will put you in touch with the right SSCo.

SE

Sport England

Sport England is responsible for delivering the Government’s sporting objectives by promoting and investing in sport and delivering on the vision to make England an active and successful sporting nation.

As well as providing funding for British Orienteering as the National Governing Body for the sport, they can also offer grants for your club.

Please contact your Regional Development Officer or Participation Manager at British Orienteering for more information.

SDO

Sports Development Officer

They manage the co-ordination and delivery of your local Sport and Recreation Strategy. They also assist in the local sports development through schools, voluntary groups, facilities & clubs and provide.

As well as general club development, they can provide training opportunities for coaches, sports leaders and volunteers in your club and help with funding applications.

SSP

School Sport Partnership

A cluster of schools working together to develop PE and sport opportunities for all young people.

Positions with this partnership include PDM, SSCo and Competition Manager

There are huge benefits to working with school sport partnerships especially with attracting school children and their families to your club.

 

Step into Sport

Step into Sport focuses on young people aged 14 to 19, giving them opportunities to become involved in sports leadership and volunteering and encouraging them to continue this into later life. 

If you want to develop your volunteer base then it’s worth taking advantage of this scheme. The best way to do this is through your local Partnership Development Manager.

UKCC

The UK Coaching Certificate

An initiative to endorse coach education programmes, across sports within the UK, against agreed criteria.

British Orienteering work with the UKCC to make sure orienteering coaching programmes are of a high quality. For further information click here.

Y.L.A.

Young Leader Award

An award for 14-19 year olds.  Aimed to fit in with the Junior Sports Leader scheme the award encourages participants to work with younger children and to teach them the basics of Orienteering.

Young people who take this award are fantastic candidates for joining your club. Work with your PDM to reach them.

Y.S.T

 

Youth Sport Trust

A registered charity, established in 1994.

Our mission is to build a brighter future for young people by enhancing the quality of their physical education (PE) and sporting opportunities. It plays a central role in the development and support of sports colleges.

You won’t need to deal directly with the Youth Sports Trust. Instead work with the people from within their system (Partnership Development Managers).

PESSYP

PE, School Sport and Young People

One of the main aims of the national PE, School Sport and Young People (PESSYP) strategy is to increase pupils’ participation in high quality PE and School Sport (PESS).

 
SDU

Sport Development Unit/Team

A unit/team in your local council responsible for supporting community sport. The size and responsibilities of these teams varies from council to council.

They are in place to help you develop your club in all aspects.
